Being Vegan, Vegan Being: Melissa Huggins – Giving the World Big Vegan Huggs

I’m originally from Long Island, NY and I moved to Los Angeles in my 20’s. I lived there for 10 years and now I live in Arizona with my 5-old son and boyfriend. We are all 100% vegan.

I’m a full-time vegan food and lifestyle blogger at Vegan Huggs. I created this blog to share my love for tasty vegan food and my love for animals.

What was the moment you realize that you wanted to go vegan?

I watched the documentary Earthlings and I changed overnight. It was very hard to watch, but I feel I needed to see the truth.

How long have you been Vegan?

I’ve been vegan since early 2020.

Why is being Vegan important to you?

I want to live my life without hurting others. Being vegan has made that possible and it’s so easy to do.

Do you actively promote veganism? How? Please share any stories you would like.

I promote it every day, in small ways and bigger ways. Social media is great for spreading the vegan message. I also use my blog as a way to do it too.

Do you miss any non-Vegan foods?

I don’t miss anything because I’ve been able to veganize all my favorites from back in the day.

What is your favorite Vegan stereotype? If someone asks you a question about it, how do you respond?

“So, how do you get your protein?” I always respond with kindness because I was once curious about this too. I thought vegans were unhealthy. Vegans get plenty of complete protein from plants, legumes, beans, grains nuts, and seeds. I’ve never met anyone who was protein deficient.

What’s your favorite Vegan restaurant?

Vinh Loi Tofu in Reseda California

Some encouraging words for new Vegans?

Be easy on yourself and take it one day at a time. It’s not always easy to transition overnight. Join vegan meetup groups to help your transition easier.

Are you a Cruelty-Free vegan?

Yes, I’m vegan for the animals and my health.

Talk about a time when you struggled with your Veganism?

I never struggled with it, but it’s hard to know the truth about animal cruelty. I wish it would end. We don’t need to eat animals to be healthy and thrive.

What is one question you would ask other Vegans? Please answer it.

I usually just ask what made them go vegan. There’s always that awakening moment that they share. I find it fascinating.
