Inspirational Moment: Ryan Duysen – It doesn’t make you weak to get help, it makes you wise.

This is a picture of when my family and I became Australian citizens recently. I feel so blessed to have dual citizenship in two of the most amazing countries.

This Inspirational Moment brought to you by Ryan Duysen. I am from a beautiful mountain town in Wyoming but I have been living in paradise, aka Brisbane, Queensland Australia for the last 10 years.

What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to go through in your life.

I think the most difficult things I’ve had to overcome have been the issues in my own head. In the past, I hurt people I loved with my own baggage until I learned how to deal with it and channel some of it in a more positive way. I have sought help a few times in my life to navigate my own thoughts and I can’t over emphasize how important it can be to your relationships and your own health to know when you could use some advice. It doesn’t make you weak to get help, it makes you wise.

What did you learn from it that you could pass on to someone else?

We need to look out for each other and for ourselves. Know when you’re not acting like you think you should in particular situations or when those around you have concerns – take steps to get some advice. It is so much easier and helpful than society lets you believe. Life is short, make sure you are making the most of yours.

What has been the Happiest Moment of your life?

Being a husband and father – I would be lost without my family. They are incredible and their love for me continuously amazes me. My wife is my best friend and my three daughters are now teenagers. They are wonderful young women but I’d go back and raise them all over again. I loved (and probably didn’t fully appreciate) every stage they have gone through.

What is your Passion?

This is a tough one, I think I have several passions.
1) I love riding my bicycle – for the part of me that’s an introvert, it’s my time with myself and I get lots of thinking done.

I recently exceeded 10,000km (+6,200 miles) again this year. I didn’t think this was going to be possible after I was hit while cycling by a vehicle in May (driver was looking at his phone instead of the road) and had several surgeries to fix a completely destroyed wrist. I wasn’t even able to drive for 4 months, let alone ride.
I’m feeling very blessed to have a great wife that despite her fears, let me get back on the road and for good riding buddies that helped ease me back into it (Dugald Wishart).
Bring on 2017!!!

2) I am an environmental engineer and I love trying to make the world a better place and I get to go to some of the most spectacular places on earth to find ways to protect and study some really cool animals.

3)Most of all, I love Jesus – without His love and grace, my life would be completely different and much less fruitful.

What inspires you?

Love is the ultimate inspiration – love from my family, friends, and even loving myself.

What is your favorite Inspirational Quote?

Isaiah 6:8 – Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And I said, “Here I am, send me!”

For me this is inspirational because it continuously reminds me that if I see a need in the world that I feel passionate about, it’s me that is called do something about it.I shouldn’t be waiting on the government or someone else; I need to act on what is in my heart to make a difference.

How do you try to inspire others?

Being genuine and authentic are two of my attributes that inspire others. In a world where people play games and manipulate others, I try to always be exactly what people see. My team and colleagues appreciate this and sometimes it means I get taken advantage of but people always trust me 100% and it has meant that people reach out to me in times of desperation when they might not feel safe to do so otherwise.

One non-profit you support?

Community Canteen is a homeless shelter that my daughters and I have been cooking food at regularly for the past 4 years. It is amazing to see how my daughters engage and show light into lives that know mostly darkness.

What is one easy thing you can do to change the world for good in the next 24 hours?

Recycle and use less plastic. I have been to extremely remote beaches where no one has walked in years but are covered in ghost nets and plastic. In total mass, there will soon be more plastic in our oceans than fish and it’s something that we need to fix together but we all need to do our part individually to make it work.
