Inspirational Moment: Janice Smith – Expect nothing, and Appreciate Everything

This Inspirational Moment brought to you by Janice Smith of Jackson, Wyoming.

What has been the most difficult thing you’ve had to go through in your life?

Eleven years ago, watching my 5-day old son fail in health and not know why. Thankfully, a 6-day ICU stay and an additional test beyond what had already been submitted from his spinal fluid revealed that he had encephalitis and viral meningitis. His outcome has been incredible. He only experienced a slight speech delay, which we utilized local resources for early intervention for a few years and his speech is fine now. It could have been much more severe. I’ve known of children experiencing hearing loss requiring cochlear implants, mental impairments, and worst case – death, from meningitis and encephalitis.

What did you learn from it that you could pass on to someone else?

I learned that you really have to cherish each day and everyone special in your life and that at some point in every person’s life there will be challenges… kind.

What has been the Happiest Moment of your life?

Marrying my husband and having two wonderful children are my happiest moments. What I find ironic is that I never intended to have children! But, once my nephew came along, I reconsidered. 

What is your Passion?

This is a tough question! I have so many interests, but I’m not sure I have a true passion considering my interpretation of the word. What comes very close is striving to raise responsible, kind, compassionate, mindful, active, independent, capable, happy children who will contribute positively to our world.

What inspires you?

Learning about individuals who have overcome great odds and/or who have lived a very long, active, productive life that defies age-related stereotypes. I have admiration for and garnered inspiration from so many people that I know, and others I’ve only read about.

What is your favorite Inspirational Quote?

“Expect nothing, and appreciate everything” (another one…Always be Humble and Kind. That Tim McGraw song really says it all).

How do you try to inspire others?

I strive to be humble and kind, to always smile, and treat others with respect. I try to be a positive role model for my children with all of these qualities and more. I want to raise the bar for respectful conversation and take the high road with disagreements and awkward situations and to encourage personal responsibility and hard work. I feel that if I continue trying to better myself as a person, and I surround myself with those like-minded, we will continue to inspire each other.

One non-profit you support?

Jackson/Teton County Animal Shelter

What is one easy thing you can do to change the world for good in the next 24 hours?

LISTEN! Learn the social skill of listening to others instead of reacting or judging or interrupting or dominating the conversation. If we all listened more and talked less, perspectives in this world would change.

  1. I already knew Janice had all these kind, generous, and fun qualities. I didn’t know Janice had to go through such a difficult few days so early in her son’s life. I’m grateful that her son pulled through and now has a happy, healthy life. This was a great story!
