Inspirational Entrepreneur and Cancer Survivor: Samuel Bruni

Samuel Bruni is an entrepreneur and cancer survivor and this is his story.

I was born outside of Eugene Oregon. After I got married, I moved to Utah because the economy was not great in Oregon back in the mid-1990’s. I currently live in Aliso Viejo and work in E-Commerce and Tech. I’m super patient about life! My wife and kids come first, but then next is my business. I love business, being an entrepreneur for me is a drug and addiction.

There is this crazy trend right now around being an Entrepreneur at a young age, to the point that it is glorified. When I was young, being an Entrepreneur meant you did badly in school. I can see where becoming a father at the age of 23 really changed my life because I had to make a real income. Forcing me to do entrepreneurial things on the side.

In my early 20’s I owned 1-900 numbers for psychic readings, and sports info. (nothing sexual). I bought just about every infomercial opportunity and tried to copy what these guys were doing. I realized they were making all their money selling you shit. I’ve had so many failed businesses I can barely count them all. Having a wife and five kids has really made me have to focus on not only being an Entrepreneur but an Intrapreneur which can be really really hard. I’ve been fortunate enough to be building businesses within businesses, but I haven’t always been calling the shots.

Because of that, I’ve learned way more about business while watching almost every side venture fail. Most the businesses I worked on failed because of greed, though, not wanting to give up equity and trying to do it all on my own. I once turned down 1 million in VC, and the business eventually failed. Had I taken it, it would not have. The point is, there is nothing wrong with waiting patiently until you’re older and have more experience.

Besides my wife and children, the thing I am most proud of is what I’ve been able to accomplish in my career. The businesses I’ve been a part of building and growing have produced almost 1 billion in annual revenue now. I also went back to school when I was late in my 30’s. You should never stop trying to improve yourself. I think School is really messed up, though, so I’m not saying you have to do that, but you should always be reading and learning and improving yourself.

Currently, I’m trying to build my Instagram. I’ve been under contract for the last three years where I couldn’t really be growing my name on social media. I’m way behind. Please help him out by connecting with him here on Instagram:

How do you think we can fix the racial divide in the United States?

It’s a mess and long to get into but essentially we’ve done a better job at integrating other cultures into our society then we have the African Americans. We never really turned out to be a melting pot, and so when immigrants come to the United States, they hang onto their heritage, culture beliefs etc. But African Americans were here with us, they built the country with us and they have never been treated as such. Anyway, touchy subject and hard to articulate.

Have you ever thought of an invention?

What? In 2002 I stood in front of a team I managed tired of carrying three devices Palm Pilot, MP3 Player and, Cell Phone and talked ot them about combining them into one. I got an email from one of those employees the year the iphone came out and said this is what you described. I was like, yea, but I don’t think I would have made it that awesome. I’m known as the deal site guy. I built 100 million in deal sites, and two years before Groupon, I pitched to the President of my company this idea of doing daily deals for local businesses, he said it wasn’t part of our Hedge Hog. I got emails when groupon came out. I was an explorer of Google glass, and I thought these guys missed the mark. Should have made them like Ray Ban’s so we could just record everything but be cool, and have a bigger viewing screen for surfing the web. When the Snapchat glasses came out a couple of weeks ago, somebody emailed me and said, kind of what you were saying in 2013. Not exactly but close. I could go on and on. This is my life. I obsess over innovative ideas.

Do you think bullying is avoidable or that it should be just accepted as part of right so passage? Where does it come from?

It comes from parents. There is a ton of tension in our society, people hate their jobs, and are over worked and over stressed. Kids are seeing this, and I think this is their way of dealing with it. There is a good video that Simon Sinek does on leadership and he talks about it briefly and I tend to agree.

  1. Love How to Win Friends and Influence People, Simon Sinek, and I would add Rich Dad Poor Dad to the favorite book category. I also have a real passion around innovation and ideas for improving existing systems or creating new, and quality of life. Maybe it’s “in the water”. Wishing you continued success!
