Being Vegan, Vegan Being: Katie Farina – Katie’s Healing Kitchen

About 10 years ago I was in college when my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Seeing my mom, my best friend go through this awful situation was horrible. I hated seeing her feel out of control of her own body and at the mercy of Western medicine.

But, I knew there had to be some way I could help her. I started reading a ton about health + nutrition, realizing I couldn’t be a nurse or a doctor (I’ve barely passed every science class I’ve ever taken), but I loved the simple fact that so many foods had so many amazing health benefits, like ginger + turmeric are powerful for lowering inflammation or broccoli sprouts are off the charts in cancer-fighting properties.

I went to the kitchen and started experimenting with these healing superfoods and ways to easily add them to my mom’s diet to gain the most benefits while still tasting delicious. I’m so happy to say that my mom is cancer-free and helping her through that experience made me want to help others get healthy and prevent disease.

And that’s how Katie’s Healing Kitchen was born, we are a vegan, gluten-free, refined sugar-free, organic cooking school and blog that focuses on using food as medicine in delicious + easy ways. We teach at The Wine Vault + Bistro in San Diego, corporate wellness programs around the country, and at Rancho La Puerta, a wellness spa in Mexico. Just this past December I self-published my very first cookbook, which took over 3 years of hard work for me to create, a true labor of love, but now is a way to spread health and compassion through delicious plant-based recipes.

I hope to inspire people to get cooking and make healthy and delicious meals. But even more than that — I hope it’s an excuse to break bread with family and friends. Good food, lovingly prepared and enjoyed with others, has the amazing ability to bring people together to focus on the important things in life.

I’m on Instagram and Facebook, too.
