What lead you to veganism? How long ago?
I turned vegan in July 2015 after a good friend of mine – Chris Hines, founder of Hit The Floor magazine – went vegan and told me all about it.
When you first went vegan how did you phase out your non-vegan food, clothing and other items?
I just binned up all the meat from my freezer and finished off eating the ice cream and tins of tuna. I wore my leather shoes a while longer but obviously didn’t buy any new ones.
Do you believe we should show children the process of how animals are turned into meats?
Only if my (vegan) children are curious about eating meat, in which case, yes absolutely. I do think kids should see how meat is made from start to finish, yes.
What does being vegan mean to you?
I do not kill bugs or bees intentionally. I have done accidentally or when they bite or scare me, I’m afraid to say. I try not to and blame this instinct that I have. I commend vegans who can stand cockroaches and mosquitoes. I try to avoid them and avoid hurting them, but sometimes I do. I don’t get too bothered or involved with non-vegan parent companies ad boycotting ‘imperfect’ brands. I try very hard to give people space and honor to be themselves without feeling superior, better, more evolved, woke / wise, clever etc. Too many people find vegan an obscure concept. It’s draining trying to change everyone and prove them wrong all the time. In myself I honor my choices. If people are not there, they’re not there. I will converse, engage with and help ANYONE showing interest in veganism.
Is it every vegan’s duty to become an activist?
I think it is, because it is compelling. But you should find your best way to do it. It may be only small. Spend only the energy you have spare after attending to your own needs. We need to be ‘full’ ourselves before we can spend our energy, resources, time etc convincing others of our beliefs.
