Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi! My name is Rachel and I run ladlebyladle.com. I am an eating disorder survivor. Recovery was the biggest adventure I have ever been on. It tested my willpower, sanity, and personal health. It is a journey I hope to use to inspire other girls stuck in restrictive cycles of eating who are looking for help. I am most active on my Youtube channel where I post two times a week and daily on my Instagram.
What lead you to veganism? How long ago?
I found veganism after my recovery, having been a vegetarian for years prior. Of course, like many, I watched ALL the documentaries and I was horrified by the impact that animal agriculture has on the wellbeing of our planet. Once I was fully recovered I went from vegetarian to full veganism because I believe that is the only way I can make a lasting impact on the devastation that is animal agriculture. As an animal lover, environmental activist, and human being I can’t see any other way to live.
What does being vegan mean to you?
To me, being vegan means not using any product or food that requires animal ingredients or animal testing. We are at a point in society where using and abusing animals for our livelihood is no longer necessary, so why are we doing it!? I do this to the best of my ability with the information I have.
How compassionate or empathetic are you towards non-vegans?
My boyfriend is not vegan and I am very compassionate towards him. I try to be as relaxed and non-judgemental as possible in hopes that one day he makes the same connections that I did. I find that leading by example and being a good person is the best way to spread the message. Many of my friends have expressed interest in veganism to me even though I never pushed it on them and my parents have even gone vegetarian because of me. People don’t like being attacked or talked down to. It’s important to remember that almost all of us were not vegan our whole lives, and at one point we also felt the way other non-vegans do now.
