Being Vegan, Vegan Being: Annette Felix – Most of us were not Born Vegan so we Need to Use wisdom and Empathy when Dealing with Non-vegans.

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Annette Felix I live in Orlando FL. I am an entrepreneur. I have been vegan for 4 years and an animal rights activist for 2 and 1/2. You can follow me on IG at @God’s_vegan_girl.

What lead you to veganism?

I grew up in a traditional Latin home eating animals all my life. I always loved animals and was against poaching, hunting and circuses but I was missing the connection with the animals on my plate. At the age of 37 I saw a video on Facebook titled “This is why I’m vegan” that video showed happy rescued cows, pigs and chickens. By the end of the video I was in tears and made the connection no more eating animals for me.

When you first went vegan how did you phase out your non-vegan food, clothing and other items?

I went vegetarian for a month then fully vegan.

Do you make any exceptions for yourself or if you are married with kids – your family, when it comes to veganism?

I don’t make any exceptions for myself or my son.

Do you believe we should show children the process of how animals are turned into meats?

Yes, we should and let them decide for themselves if they want to continue to participate or not.

What does being vegan mean to you?

Veganism to me is a lifestyle where you cause the least harm possible. I extend compassion to every living being from a tiny ant to a human being.

Is it every vegan’s duty to become an activist?

Yes, I believe it is. Now, not every form activism is for everyone. Everyone needs to find what form of activism they are comfortable with whether it’s cooking delicious vegan food or doing vigils. The key is that we are not just sitting back doing nothing, we must all be active for the animals and our planet.

How compassionate or empathetic are you towards non-vegans?

I try to be empathetic toward non-vegans because I was there once. We have to remember that most of us were not born vegan so we need to use wisdom when we deal with non-vegans.
