My name is Angel Manuel Rodriguez Vega, I am Puerto Rican, a self-taught vegan, and free runner {Traceur}, which means “tracer” in French. I was born on the island of Puerto Rico, and grew up in Ponce, where I live currently. I teach free running and coach people to live happy, healthy lives as well.
I am currently known as “The Vegan Rican” and own the largest vegan community in the island called Puerto Rico Vegano. The idea is to unite people so we can speak the truth about veganism for the love of animals, humans and the planet. You can follow me on Instagram as “@angeltheveganrican” & be a part of my community “@puertoricovegano”.

What was the moment you realize that you wanted to go vegan?

Two years ago I suffered from severe anxiety and depression. I knew that taking medication like “Prozac” to control my anxiety was not the best idea because it often comes with many side effects, so I started researching on the web for natural remedies to get rid of anxiety. I can say that I tried them all and they did help a bit. After feeling better I decided to start a Free Running group called Ponce Free Runners so I could teach people and keep busy. Suddenly, my first student came and they were a vegan. How did I know? Well, I invited him to come eat with me at McDonald’s after class and he said “No thanks, I’m a vegan.” At that time I had never heard of the word vegan so I asked him what it meant. After he explained, I thought he was crazy! I thought to myself, where does he get his protein. For a person who didn’t eat meat, dairy, or eggs he was more muscular that most meat-eaters I knew, including myself. We became best friends and he invited me over to his house to try some vegan food. I was amazed! After long hours of talking about veganism, I decided to do some research on my own and found a video on YouTube called, “The best speech you will ever hear,” by Gary Yourofsky. I promised myself to NEVER eat anything that comes from an animal again. I swear that all my anxiety disappeared after turning vegan.
