Being Vegan, Vegan Being: Abril Paredes – A Lot Has Transformed Me…

Processed with VSCO with g3 preset

A little bit goes a long way, but I’m down to tell a nice story. My name is Abril, with a B (not April), I am 19 years old, birthday May 28, and I’m a very hyper, energetic, and generally happy person! Emphasis on the energetic haha, I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 12, but I feel like I outgrew that. I was born and raised in Miami, Florida, with my father who has Peruvian blood and my mother being Salvadoreña. I suffered through a lot growing up, with my father being deported when I was just 6 years old, having my mother raise me and my sister alone as she worked triple shifts. I never really understood the situation as a baby, but it wasn’t bad since I’d always visit my dad every year in Peru. I don’t want to get into too much detail, really. Just know god works his magic, and not everything is sunshine and smiles.

I now live in Los Angeles, California, ever since I was 16. I know what it’s like to live on the streets, to not have food, to live off of what the church gives you. But it all fortifies you. After graduating high school at the age of 17, I went straight to college, where I am now in the Paralegal Program, and have been for two years. I ran Cross Country and track my high school years, but my love for running sort of died when I fell in love with weightlifting. It’s a nice change, even though sometimes I still miss a good ol’ sweat from running miles on the streets full of fresh air. Also, I now work at a Security company, having a nice background of working as an Administrative Assistant for a big company which has to lead me to have quite an impressive resume. A few perks of my own would be that I am artistic with my hands. I love sketching and drawing realistic figures with just pencils. I also am an avid gamer, with a history of being a well-known streamer. I play the violin and cello as well, or, at least I used to. I haven’t had time for much, being a full-time student and worker, but I love the busy life. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have an energetic lifestyle.

Please feel to share and promote anything you want here, business, social or websites.

Just my Instagram, really. I don’t do social media. It fatigues the brain too much, and quite frankly I don’t care about tweeting, or liking someone’s picture on Facebook. I like to keep it simple, which is why I don’t have any other source of social media except Instagram. You can find me at: @crappywifi

What was the moment you realize that you wanted to go vegan?

Honestly, I didn’t have one moment. I had plenty. I remember at the age of 8, maybe 7 ish, me and my sister had gone to live with my grandma at a very poor 3rd world country, El Salvador, for about a month. In these types of countries, you have to have an open mind. The people here, they are basically taught and raised to kill and farm animals, in the most “natural” way, per say. They don’t have the luxury we Americans do, to have Frosted Flakes or filet Mignon Available in every corner you find. Killing chickens, cows, pigs, for them is a standard. It’s hard to explain, really. But in short, my grandmothers family had a tiny farm, a finca in Spanish, where they raised about two pigs and a cow, along with a few chickens. I remember these animals were, in my opinion, happy, as compared to the factory animals in our country. My grandma was going to cook chicken soup the same night she introduced us to these beautiful babies. I remember picking up the chicken and feeding it seeds, and my happiness went away so quickly. Did they have an = easier way, of killing these animals so they don’t suffer? I basically watched my grandma kill the exact same chicken I had befriended. She hung him upside down, let all the blood flow to his head, cut his throat so he suffocated to death. And I watched her pluck his feather once he stopped crazily trying to escape, and when she was done feathering him, she washed its skin. I don’t want to get into specifics, it’s rather gory. I cried that day, all night, I didn’t eat dinner, for they were eating my friend in a soup form, which I could not bare to look at. I starved that night, more preferable honestly. I haven’t been the same since that day. It really impacted me. Don’t get me wrong, I hadn’t stopped eating meat, I just took animals into more consideration. And over the years, as I grew and began to understand animals more, I became woke. I read and watched documentaries, informed myself, I became aware that animals have feelings, beating hearts, they are living beings that we do not have the right above them. I guess a lot has transformed me…

How long have you been Vegan?

I became fully vegan on December 2015 and was vegetarian before that for about a year.

Why is being Vegan important to you?

Oh geez, where do I start haha? Health reasons, to begin with, but really it’s not just because I love animals. Anyone can love animals. But it takes a different level to understand them, in the concept that they are LIVING BEINGS. Animals, any kind, pig or dog or bee, has a heart, can learn and can comprehend certain human language. They are not stupid, they understand compassion. And that’s where sometimes us humans fail.

Any recommended social sites, Facebook Groups or other?

I follow a few very inspirational Instagram pages, and a few influencers as well. Check out Nimai Delgado, a vegan bodybuilder. Also Mercy for animals, korin Sutton, and a few others I can’t think of right now.

Do you have a favorite movie or videos or your own media that you want to share?

If we’re talking outside of veganism, then hell yea haha. I’m a big anime fan, but I only watch a specific genre, that being blood/ gore/ action. If you are into that, check out Tokyo Ghoul. My favorite since forever, I’ve probably watched the whole series more than 4 times already. I actually sketch fan art of this anime, that’s how much I love this show haha. I’ll attach my Tokyo ghoul sketches if you want to check my work (:

Do you actively promote veganism? How?

Honestly, yes and no. Do I influence my family and friends? Of course. I advise them to watch certain documentaries or read certain articles. Do I attend vegan events or activism events where I pass out flyers or try to force the vegan life on someone? No, it’s not my niche. Also, I’m not very social, haha, If only I had vegan friends that I can relate to, then I’d probably do activism.

What is your favorite Vegan meme?

“Where do you get your protein from? You can’t grow muscle without meat bruh”💀🤦🏼‍♂️🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️ it’s ridiculous how many times I’ve been asked or told that.

What is the vegan stereotype you hear the most and how do you respond to it?

“Can you even eat X item? (Like pizza, or fried chicken, ice cream, etc). Priceless reaction when I educate them and say that ANYTHING can be veganised.

What’s your favorite Vegan restaurant?

That’s a good question! I don’t even know lol, I have a few up my sleeve. I really love EatByChloe, OneVegWorld, SunCafe, and Doomies Home Cooking! I don’t have any vegan friends 🙁 so it’s hard to try to get my friends to check out vegan restaurants, and I’m super down to go and try new restaurants! I live by that haha, I love trying out new spots and usually don’t go to the same spot more than 3 times unless I know their food is reliable.

Please share your favorite vegan recipe?

I suck at cooking, but I also love cooking. It’s a nice combination 😂 I once made vegan apple pie, cinnamon rolls, pizza, and banana bread with banana icecream :O but I don’t have any recipe that I remember off the top of my head, sorry!

Some encouraging words for new Vegans?

DONT BE SHY, DONT FEEL LIKE YOU ARE ALONE ON THIS because let me tell you, YOU ARE NOT ALONE. There is a HUGE vegan community that is growing every day, and if you need to advise, help on a certain issue, perhaps want more recommendations, then I GOTS YOU! I’d love to help any new coming vegans, I haven’t really had a chance to spread the vegan word because I’m constantly busy, but just know that I support you! And I’m

So happy you made the change to the dark side lol. Please keep strong, being vegan has so many benefits, aside from getting all the vegan chicks and dudes haha.

What does living cruelty-free mean to you?

It means not buying anything that is made from animals, not buying anything that has an animal bi-product. Don’t get me wrong, we all make mistakes. Sometimes, you might fuck up accidentally and buy something that has honey in it, or perhaps you didn’t 100% ask the waiter if X item is fully vegan: has no milk or eggs or whatever, but it’s okay because we are HUMAN! Mistakes happen, just learn to recognize them and move on. We all start somewhere, and sometimes temptations get to us. But keep strong! Remember, being vegan isn’t a religion or set of rules you follow, it’s not about what you can’t eat or can’t buy, it’s about what you WON’T eat or won’t buy because you realize your reasons are valid and true, whatever they might be.

What are you favorite Vegan non-food products or companies?

Daiya, Ben and Jerry’s vegan icecream, Tofurky, silk almond milk or creamers, nightlife, Follow Your Heart, Gardein, and so many more I can’t think of right now 😁 trust me, you have options! No excuses!

What is the toughest Vegan item to find that you need?

Desserts! I have a big sweet tooth, and I don’t live in an area that’s necessarily vegan-friendly. It’s a bit hard for me to find cakes, candies, cookies, etc, especially if you don’t live in Santa Monica or Pasadena, where there are so many vegan options!

Talk about a time when you struggled with your Veganism?

The first year being vegan, it’s difficult for many. Especially for someone like me who, back then, was addicted to M&Ms! I dunno, I haven’t found a vegan M&M chocolate peanut brand that is similar to it, which devastates me to this day lol, but I live without it honestly. I’ve found other sources of vegan yummies to make me forget about M&Ms.

What is one question you would ask other Vegans? Please answer it.
