Artists You Need to Know: JoJo Scott – I Want to Be the Artist Who Touches Many People in a Positive Way

Hello, my name is JoJo Scott. I am a 15-year-old singer-songwriter from Portland, Oregon. I’ve practically been singing since I was born, my parents tell me that I was humming and singing before I could even talk.

When I was younger, I used to be very shy. I was one of those kids who would hide behind their parent’s legs, but by the age of three, I surprised everyone when I got up on stage to perform. That is when my dreams to perform began! Over the past few years, I have come out of my “shell” because of the confidence that I have gained by submersing myself in music. Navigating my way through the music industry has also really opened me up, and has helped me to become much more outgoing.

Some things never change though. I still have dreams much larger than life, and they seem to just keep getting bigger and bigger as time goes on. I recently had the opportunity to perform on stage at the Moda Center in front of 19,000 people with Roger Waters, formerly of Pink Floyd. Instead of scaring me away, it made me realize just how much I really wanted to become an artist who has the ability to touch the lives of so many people in a positive way.

My parents have taught me so many important things over the years and they have done so many great things to encourage me to pursue my love and passion for music. I have had it instilled in me that you need to always try your very best and “Never Quit”, no matter how hard things get. Most importantly, the thing that I am most thankful for is the continuous love and support of my family in helping me to fulfill my dreams.

My family has always encouraged me to be the best person I could possibly be. They raised me to believe in equality and practice love, positivity and understanding. They encouraged me to give back and help others no matter what and to help put a little more good into the world. With that in mind, I would consider myself someone you would call an “intersectional feminist” or “equal rights activist”. I think It definitely comes through in some of my music whether it’s a cover that I sing, or a line in a song that I write. Peace, love, and acceptance should be spread throughout the world.

Do you have a pet? What’s its name?

I have an adorable rescue dog that I named, Gracie. She is half black lab and half border collie. I knew that we were meant to be together the moment I laid eyes on her. Aside from not being able to go up and down a staircase she is doing great! I just love and adore her!

I also just got another little black lab puppy that I named Jaxson, or “Jax”. He’s adorable and fits right into our family.

What is one thing you would tell the world right now to change the world for the better?

I would tell people to be positive and to be nice to everyone, despite your differences. I feel that this world is filled with so much hate, that if we would all just take the time to say something nice to someone, we could make it a better place. Also, just stand up to hate! If you hear someone making rude comments or gossiping about others because they are different, just tell them to stop. Don’t insult them because it just feeds into the cycle of hate.

Do you collect anything?

I collect Polaroid pictures that I take, vinyl and hair scrunchies. I also collect stickers to put on my guitar cases. Most importantly, the things I collect have something to do with memories and moments in my life that I don’t want to forget. Chasing my dreams and then collecting the memorabilia is my way to remember what I did and where I want to go!

What’s the longest road trip you have ever taken?

The longest road trip I’ve taken so far was from Portland to LA with my family. We stopped in Sacramento to pick up family that was making the road trip into LA with us. I plan to go on more road trips and make more memories, and of course, I will continue to dream about traveling the world when I tour with my band!

What would you like to be remembered for?

I’d like to be remembered for my music and for making people feel something while listening to it. Along with my music, I’d also like to be remembered for being a good person, and for always helping others who are in need.
